Dementia is an illness which can isolate people from former friends. The value of spending time with others who can share this sense of isolation cannot be overestimated.
At Dementia Active in Banbury, the team aim to create a sense of community where no one need feel apologetic or uncomfortable about not being able to do those things which in the past would have been straightforward. Conversation is encouraged – both socially, particularly when people arrive and over lunch, but also in more structured reminiscence sessions. Group activities are always opportunities to be playful. The benefits overall are raised energy levels, improved cognition and respite for the person’s carers and family.
When Dementia Active in Banbury approached us wanting a promotional film to encourage volunteering, donations and referrals, we knew this was a chance to make something very special. After a discussion with the board members and organisers on what might work as the most respectful and effective plan, we decided on an interview-based approach to underscore the film, followed by a fly-on-the wall filming session of one of their typical days. The result meant we could use the interviews to narrate all the key points of the film, and this could be illustrated by the footage of the group activities. All filming was completed in a single day and embellished with a handful of stock footage clips for some of the broader discussions about dementia in general.
The film continues to have a highly emotional impact on all who watch it, and Dementia Active were delighted with their flagship film. Here’s what they had to say:
“We can’t praise Unexplored Films highly enough. From first contact to final delivery of the video, they were helpful, friendly and, above all, professional. They grasped the brief for what we wanted the programme to do and brought their own expertise to the mix. In a potentially difficult shooting situation during the charity’s day to day working, they simply and unobtrusively filmed what was needed, putting everyone at their ease. The production values are extremely high and the final film is something to be proud of. We would recommend Steve and his team to anyone looking for a professional, cost-effective communication solution.” – Dementia Active
